What's a Hormone Readiness Assessment and How Do I Get One?

Updated: Apr 14, 2023

Would you feel more comfortable having a hormone readiness assessment done by a member of the LGBTQ2S+ community? Looking for an assessment right here in BC without a long wait?

I'm now offering hormone readiness assessments for people seeking gender-affirming hormones. These assessments can be done in-person or by Zoom, based on your comfort and preference. This assessment involves answering questions about your gender identity, feelings about your body, goals, health history, understanding of the long-term risks associated with hormone therapy and the existing supports in your life.

Understanding Hormone Readiness Assessments

In BC, people seeking gender-affirming hormone replacement treatment (HRT) require an assessment by a healthcare provider.

In addition, any mental health challenges are reviewed, for the purpose of recommending additional resources if needed. To receive hormone treatments, you do NOT need to:

  • Identify as trans*

  • Necessarily receive ongoing counselling

  • Have "lived experience" by making a social transition to the gender you identify with.

What to Expect During Your Readiness Assessment

Understanding what to expect can help calm any anxiety or concerns about the process. At Stillwaters Counselling, our goal is to make you feel supported and informed each step of the way. Your hormone readiness assessment will include:

  • An initial consultation: Discuss your personal goals, concerns, and expectations regarding hormone treatment options.

  • Medical and mental health history review: A thorough review of your health history to ensure that HRT is suitable for you int terms of any contraindications or potential interactions with HRT.

  • Informed consent and risk awareness: Ensuring that you have a clear understanding of the potential risks and benefits, including possible side effects, long-term implications, and any other information necessary for informed consent.

  • Support system evaluation: By evaluating your support system, we’re ensuring that you will get the emotional, social, and practical support needed through your HRT journey.

  • With your consent, the results will be sent to your family doctor or the healthcare provider will be responsible for managing and prescribing your hormone therapy.
